Self-designing agents are just fancy templates pretending to be clever
The rush to build agents that design other agents is solving the wrong problem entirely.
We’re watching everyone get excited about meta-agents that automatically design other agents. The pitch sounds brilliant: describe a task, watch the system choose tools and memory architectures, then deploy a bespoke agent. But this is just configuration management wearing a lab coat.
Templates work because problems repeat
The dirty secret is that most agent tasks fall into predictable patterns. Customer service bots need similar memory structures. Code review agents use the same core tools. Data analysis workflows follow established paths. We don’t need a meta-agent to rediscover these patterns every time.
Good software engineering solved this decades ago with templates, frameworks, and sensible defaults. The Spring Boot of agent development would get you further than any self-designing system. Templates are boring, but they work.
Dynamic configuration is expensive theatre
Building agents that construct other agents adds multiple failure points and debugging nightmares. When your auto-designed agent fails, you’re now debugging both the task execution and the design decisions. The meta-agent might choose the wrong memory system or miss critical tools entirely.
Meanwhile, a well-designed agent framework with sensible presets would handle 90% of use cases immediately. The remaining 10% need human expertise anyway, not more automation.
The industry keeps building increasingly complex meta-systems instead of admitting that most problems are variations on themes we already understand. Sometimes the boring solution is the right solution.
