Command-line interfaces just became the universal agent protocol

CLIs are suddenly the dominant interface for AI agents because they're the only thing that actually works across every system.

We’ve been building elaborate agent frameworks and APIs for years, but it turns out the best interface for AI agents is the same one we’ve used since the 1970s. Command-line interfaces are becoming the universal protocol for agent interaction, and there’s a bloody good reason why.

CLIs are infrastructure, not abstraction

Every modern system already speaks CLI. Your database, your deployment tools, your monitoring stack, your version control. When you give an agent CLI access, you’re not building another abstraction layer. You’re giving it native access to the same tools humans use. No custom APIs to maintain. No breaking changes when services update. No authentication headaches.

The CLI is also the only interface that’s genuinely portable. An agent that can run shell commands works on any Unix system, any container, any cloud instance. It doesn’t care about your framework choices or vendor lock-in decisions.

The complexity is finally manageable

We used to avoid giving agents shell access because it was too dangerous and unpredictable. But modern models can actually handle structured command execution without destroying everything. They understand error handling, can read documentation, and follow security constraints.

Meanwhile, every other agent interface is still a mess of custom schemas and vendor-specific protocols. CLIs just work. They’ve already solved discoverability through help systems and man pages. They’ve solved composability through pipes and scripts.

The future of agent tooling isn’t some revolutionary new interface. It’s the interface we already perfected decades ago.
