Privacy frameworks just turned edge computing into security theatre
Edge-cloud privacy solutions are elaborate workarounds for a trust problem we refuse to solve.
We’re watching privacy frameworks bend themselves into pretzels to keep data local while still getting cloud benefits. The latest batch of “edge-cloud” solutions promise to protect user data through local pseudonymisation and reversible transforms. It’s clever engineering wrapped around a fundamental admission of failure.
Trust by mathematical complexity
These frameworks work by scrambling data locally before sending it to the cloud, then unscrambling it just enough to be useful. We’re essentially saying cloud providers can’t be trusted with real data, so we’ll send them puzzle pieces instead. The mathematics are sound, but the premise is bonkers.
If you need reversible pseudonymisation to trust your infrastructure, you’ve already lost. We’re building elaborate Rube Goldberg machines because we can’t solve the simpler problem of trustworthy data handling. Every privacy-preserving technique is just a confession that our systems are fundamentally untrustworthy.
Complexity as a feature, not a bug
The real tell is how these solutions market their complexity as a selling point. Multiple transformation layers, sophisticated key management, edge-cloud coordination. It’s impressive engineering that shouldn’t need to exist. We’re optimising for mathematical privacy guarantees instead of building systems that don’t violate privacy in the first place.
The edge computing boom is partly driven by privacy theatre. We’re pushing computation closer to users not because it’s more efficient, but because we don’t trust centralised systems. That’s a infrastructure design failure, not a privacy innovation.
