Same model, different masks just turned AI safety into marketing theatre

Companies are shipping identical models with different safety layers and calling it product differentiation.

We’ve reached peak safety theatre. Companies now ship the same underlying model with different guardrail configurations and market them as distinct products. One version blocks everything, another lets you build exploits. Same weights, different masks.

The great safety shuffle

This isn’t about building safer AI. It’s about market segmentation with extra steps. Researchers get frustrated with locked-down models, so companies create “research variants” with fewer restrictions. Enterprises want liability protection, so they get the heavily filtered version. Everyone pays different prices for the same computational work.

The underlying capability hasn’t changed. The model still knows how to write malware or build exploits. Safety becomes a toggle in the API config, not an architectural decision. We’re essentially running content filters on steroids and pretending that’s meaningful safety engineering.

Safety as a service tier

This approach treats safety like a subscription feature. Pay more, get fewer restrictions. Need to test security vulnerabilities? Upgrade to the premium dangerous tier. Want peace of mind for your corporate deployment? Stick with basic safety mode.

The problem isn’t offering different configurations. It’s that we’re calling this safety when it’s really just access control. True safety would mean the model fundamentally cannot produce harmful outputs, not that it chooses not to based on which API key you’re using.
