Agent Loops Are the Distributed Systems Problem Nobody Wanted Back

Giving AI agents permission to run continuously in the background is not a product feature, it is a distributed systems nightmare dressed up in a demo.

Agentic AI has been creeping towards something awkward for a while now. The latest move, authorising swarms of agents to run in continuous background loops, feels like a breakthrough until you remember that the software industry spent two decades learning why always-on distributed processes are brutally hard to manage. We learned those lessons. Now we are unlearning them.

This Is Just Microservices With a Chatbot Face

Autonomous agent loops have all the same failure modes as any long-running distributed system. Runaway processes, cascading state corruption, tasks that silently complete the wrong thing for hours before anyone notices. The difference is that microservices at least fail predictably. An agent loop that has been authorised to act continuously does not fail, it drifts. And drifting systems are much harder to debug than broken ones.

The tooling does not exist yet to make this manageable. We have no mature observability layer for multi-agent loops. We have no standard way to checkpoint state, roll back actions, or audit what a swarm of agents actually decided to do at 3am while everyone was asleep.

Continuous Does Not Mean Correct

There is a seductive logic to “always on” agents. More compute time, more progress. But correctness does not accumulate linearly with uptime. An agent running without interruption is an agent running without correction. The value of human oversight is not ceremony, it is error detection. Remove the natural pause points and you remove the feedback loops that catch mistakes before they compound.

The labs building these systems are not naive. But the people buying and deploying them often are. Selling continuous autonomous loops as a productivity feature, without being honest about the operational complexity underneath, is setting up a generation of practitioners for very expensive surprises.

We are not against agentic AI. We think agent loops will matter enormously. But right now the product is ahead of the infrastructure by several miles.
